Recommended tool order
Prioritize tools by survival impact and progression gates: Scanner first, Habitat Builder next, fully functioning Fabricator after that, then Sonic Resonator, Repair Tool, depth gear, and mobility upgrades.
- Scanner: turns ruins, fragments, and wrecks into progression instead of scenery.
- Habitat Builder: solves storage, power, oxygen reset, and full Fabricator access.
- Sonic Resonator: opens large ore deposits and blocked biofilm routes.
- Repair Tool: opens damaged doors and leads into depth gear routes.
- Rebreather and vehicle path: make deeper and longer routes repeatable.
How to avoid tool bottlenecks
Pin the recipe, check missing materials, and avoid long trips until you know whether the missing dependency is a scan, station, or raw resource.
- If the recipe is hidden, build a base Fabricator instead of using only the Lifepod station.
- If a large ore says unknown tool, unlock the Sonic Resonator.
- If a tool needs lead, use the northeast ravine route.
- If a vehicle path needs a Power Cell, check salt and Strong Acid requirements.
Tool blocker checklist
When a tool path stalls, identify the exact blocker before swimming away from base.
- Missing scans: go to the fragment route, not the resource route.
- Missing material: open the matching resource page and gather only that bottleneck.
- Missing station: build the base Fabricator or vehicle infrastructure first.
- Missing adaptation: follow the story/adaptation route before entering dangerous terrain.
- Missing oxygen: upgrade tank or build an outpost before trying the same route again.
Tools FAQ
Which tool should I unlock first?
Unlock the Scanner first because fragments and blueprint scans open most early progression paths.
